Unfortunately, this time capsule kitchen had seen better days, and the layout was not conducive to today’s lifestyle where kitchens are a gathering space, and cooking is a communal activity. We removed the wall between the kitchen and formal dining room to achieve our goal of creating one extensive open food prep and dining area. The client’s collection of Copco enamelware made in Denmark during the 50s and 60s was the inspiration for the kitchen. We integrated laminate into the design to be more authentic to the mid-century vibe. Through a European company, we found the saturated colors of Avocado Green, Harvest Gold, and Orange. The addition of natural birch and gray porcelain floor tiles into the composition provided the balance between retro and 21st century modern that we wanted to achieve. Of special note are the flush inset induction cooktop in the island and its counterpoint, the overhead flush-to-ceiling exhaust.
